Virus

A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes.  Even a simple virus is can bring your computer to a halt.

Worm

Worms spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, it has the capability to travel without any help from a person. 

Spyware

Software that covertly gathers information through your internet connection without your knowledge.

Trojan

A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application.  

Phishing

An attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy organization. 

Spam

Electronic junk mail.  Spam is rife with worms, Trojans, and viruses that can be attached as what seems to be legitimate files in e-mail messages.

Spim

Spam over instant messaging (IM).   Spim is perpetuated by bots that harvest IM screen names off of the internet and simulate a human user by sending spam to the screen names via an instant message.

 

Download your FREE Microsoft Security Essentials Software

1.  Uninstall existing antivirus products.

2.  Go to http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/  and download the install the Security

     Essentials software.

3.  After the installation, the software will prompt you to initiate a scan of your computer.   Select the

     checkbox to start the san and click on the Finish button.
